Notation

Notation can stand for:

  • the syntax , the logical relation to each other (mostly of words), the written arrangement
  • the orthography , the spelling
  • the typography , the font design
  • the etymology (word origin, original spelling )
  • the transcription , the representation of a sound, word or name from another language with the letters of a given alphabet (mostly the Latin alphabet) or a phonetic transcription , more specifically
    • for transcription , the pronunciation-based spelling in an alphabet other than the original alphabet (e.g. Chinese names in western spelling) or
    • for transliteration , the script-based, scientific-to-the-letter spelling in a different alphabet than the original alphabet (e.g. Russian names in scientific transliteration or IPA phonetic spelling)
  • the nomenclature , the rules of word formation
  • the notation , the written representation, not only of languages, but also of music, dance, chess or mathematics / algorithms
  • the diction , the linguistic expression
  • in literary studies as group formation independent of epoch and culture, see spelling (literary studies)
