The Shrine of Bab is a Baha'i sanctuary and is located in Haifa , Israel . The tomb of Bab , the founder of the religion of Babism , is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations of the Baha'i after the Baha'u'llah shrine in Western Galilee and is the symbol of the port city. The location of the shrine was chosen by Baha'u'llah , the founder of the Baha'i religion , during one of his stays in Haifa. Of Abdul-Baha (1844-1921) just a plain basic structure was initially built by nine rooms. Shoghi Effendi commissioned the architect William Sutherland Maxwell - according to the wishes of Abdul-Baha - to decorate these with arcades and a superstructure. The marble and granite for the structure come from Italy and were obtained from Ugo Giachery , an Italian Bahai. The work was completed in October 1953. Together with the other historical places of pilgrimage of the Bahai in Haifa and the Western Galilee, the shrine belongs since July 2008 World Heritage of UNESCO . Since 2001, the shrine has been surrounded by 18 garden terraces, nine above and nine below the shrine, which extend over a kilometer on the slope of Mount Carmel and shape the cityscape ( Baha'i Gardens ). A comprehensive renovation of the building was completed in 2011. Since then it has been considered earthquake-proof.

The remains of Abdul-Baha are currently in one of the rooms (see also: Shrine of Abdul-Baha ).
