features
Macroscopic features
The thallus is white or gray, which can be smooth or cracked. The hysterothecia are very variable and can be simple to branched or networked in a star shape. They have a black, narrow or relatively wide disc, which can be frosted white.
Microscopic features
The spores are hyaline , 1-15 septate , 25–70 × 6–10 µm. With iodine-potassium iodide solution , the spores turn blue-violet (J +).

discussion
Graphis scripta can be very rich in forms. Numerous modifications have been described as a species. Then one should still be able to distinguish between Graphis betulina , Graphis macrocarpa , Graphis pulverulenta . This has yet to be confirmed by molecular phylogenetic studies.
Location
It occurs up to the tree line on the smooth bark of deciduous trees (especially beech, hornbeam, ash, hazel), less often on fir. It prefers shady, humid locations on areas that have been rained or humidified by trunk runoff water. It is still one of the most common species in southern Germany, but has already become partially rare in the north.
