Ungargasse school center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The school center HTL HAK Ungargasse (SZU) is located on Ungargasse in the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse, and is attended by almost 1,000 students. For years, physically and sensually handicapped pupils have been trained here together with non-handicapped in an integrative school form that is unique in Austria . The proportion is almost 10% in the entire school building. The SZU offers two basic branches of training: the commercial and the technical direction. With special measures (individual support, support teachers, LOOK projects, etc.), on the one hand, the special situations of disabled students are addressed in the interests of equal opportunities and, on the other hand, the social skills and teamwork skills of all are promoted. A modern equipped student residence is attached to the school building.

School history

Ungargasse school center

Foundation: Technical College

The teacher Franz Schuster, who himself returned from the Second World War as a war disabled , established an institution primarily for disabled people returning from war when he founded the Technical College in Vienna 5 , Geigergasse 5-9. As light to severely disabled people, this should enable them to receive sound training in order to be able to (re) integrate them into the professional world. Over the years there have been several changes of position.

HTBL and BHS Vienna V

In 1971 it was expanded to include the Higher Technical College and Federal Commercial School Vienna V (HTBL and BHS Vienna V). The management and a few classrooms that were used by the commercial school remained in Geigergasse. The technical workshops of the HTL / technical school were set up in the one-storey wing of the former prosthesis workshop.

The technical department with the higher department for industrial engineering (renamed the higher department for mechanical engineering and industrial engineering from the school year 1977/78 ) with the Matura and with the four-year technical college for industrial engineering was housed in the school building at Castelligasse 25 / Bacherplatz, the commercial department with the commercial school in the school building Phorusgasse in the 4th district .

At that time, the HTL / technical school was still run according to the principle of "reverse integration" (see below) and with small school classes (up to a maximum of 25 students in the first class.) The integration of non-disabled students increased continuously over the years, in In the 1970s the ratio was still around 25 to 75% with disabled people, but remained below 1: 1 until the move to the later SZU . In accordance with the school concept of training for originally war invalids in the transition to accident victims, the average age in the classes was not, as in other vocational schools with entry after the 8th grade, at 14 years, but higher. Due to the technical workshop operation, independent mobility was a prerequisite for admission to the technical department. This not least because there was no wheelchair access and no elevators in the Bacherplatz school building.

The classes at the commercial school in Phorusgasse were almost exclusively run by physically and sensually impaired students, and the school building was handicapped accessible. Mainly for these severely to severely disabled students in the commercial department, the school was running a student hostel at Hochheimgasse 1 in Vienna- Hietzing . connected. The students were transported back and forth between the two locations in the 13th and 4th district by school bus.

School center HTL HAK Ungargasse

As early as the 1970s, plans for a new building were being discussed due to the division into the four locations (including the student dormitory) and the growing need for classrooms. A suitable area was found in the area of the former Harrach Garden Palace at Ungargasse 69 in the 3rd district . Construction began in 1985 and in 1987 the school center in Ungargasse was fully equipped and barrier-free . Since then, the school has been called the Higher Technical College, Federal Commercial Academy and Federal Commercial School Vienna 3.

"Inverse Integration" model

As has been the case for decades, training at the SZU takes place in integration classes. In the sense of "reverse integration" in the 1970s, the mixing ratio in the technical department was still around 75:25 to a maximum of 1: 1 between disabled and non-disabled and in the commercial school almost exclusively for disabled students (see above in HTBL and BHS Vienna V ). In the SZU , on the other hand, the proportion of students with physical and sensory disabilities is only around 25%. This means that one can no longer speak of “reverse integration”.

The pupils with special needs receive in terms of the desired equal opportunities

  • special funding with individual funding,
  • Support teacher,
  • Provision of resources,
  • Perceiving and taking into account special needs in the classroom in order to achieve the training goal,
  • special items that promote integrative action,
  • special educational advice,
  • medical and therapeutic care in the school building and
  • intensive care in the adjoining student residence .

The aim is to strengthen their self-confidence by getting to know their strengths and weaknesses. In this way, all students acquire an integrative attitude and can strengthen their social skills. The SZU is open to new forms of teaching (e.g. cross-project and interdisciplinary teaching) and the use of modern technologies. The key qualifications of team orientation, communication skills and presentation skills are particularly important.

Subjects in the SZU

Technical training

HTL for industrial engineers, focus on business IT

In the HTL for industrial engineering and business informatics ( HW; 5 years with Matura) the areas of economics, technology and IT are combined in a single training branch in which the students learn mechanical engineering - from computer-aided design to production on CNC machine tools to Assembly in the workshop - get to know. The field of business informatics includes the creation of business software projects in various programming languages, handling of database and operating systems. Presentation techniques and forms of communication are further central areas.

HTL for information technology, focus on network technology

The training course information technology and network technology ( HI; 5 years with Matura) prepares students specifically for working with computers - both operating systems and computer architecture. Programming and the professional handling of databases are central components. Project management teaches you how to organize and present projects.

FS for mechanical engineering with operational experience, focus on tool and fixture construction and production technology

The technical school for mechanical and manufacturing technology ( FT; 4 years) offers practice-oriented training, the students spend a third of the teaching time in the workshop or in the workshop laboratory. The constructions are created with a pen or with a wide variety of CAD programs and then produced with computer-controlled machine tools. You are also trained in the correct use of various machines, such as turning or milling machines.

FS for leather design with operational experience

The technical school for leather design ( FL; 3 years) trains in the production of leather accessories such as handbags and small leather goods. The students spend half of the class time in the workshop and in the studio. The design of work pieces in a fashionable design is part of this creative training. Model and pattern drawing is taught in the same way as the decorative techniques for leather.

Special training

Orientation level

The physically and sensory disabled students receive after successful completion of the 8th grade in a one-year orientation stage (AO) the opportunity to prepare for their upcoming (secondary) education by repeating the substance of the lower stage. The aim of the orientation level is for students to recognize their strengths and weaknesses in order to decide on the right education.

Premises

IT Academy

The IT Academy (ITAC for short) was a student project as part of the diploma thesis in the 2014/15 school year to provide two new IT and network rooms in the SZU. The ITAC consists of two parts, Room A ( Cisco Academy) and Room B ( Microsoft Academy).

ITAC-A

The ITAC-A contains high-quality products from CISCO such as routers and switches, which are available to the students for exercises. Here, tests can be carried out on real hardware in order to gain better experience and knowledge for practical work without endangering the school network.

ITAC-B

ITAC-B is heavily designed for virtualization. High quality computers allow multiple servers and clients to be virtualized simultaneously without any noticeable loss of performance.

Therapy facilities and student home

In school Ungargasse therapy facilities are available, so that the students medical and psychological care is available throughout the entire lesson time. This means that therapies can also be integrated into everyday school life.

About 80 students live in the student dormitory attached to the school building, which is open to disabled and non-disabled students. The specially trained staff offers each student individual support and support.
