The Schuppengrundkuckuck ( Neomorphus squamiger ) is a cuckoo species of the Neotropis . The species is sometimes listed as a subspecies of the Tajazuikuckucks .
features
The scale ground cuckoo becomes about 43 cm long. There is no such thing as sexual dimorphism . Outwardly it is very similar to the Tajazuikuckuck. The bonnet is shiny black and blue, the forehead and chest are brownish, with the tips of the feathers being darker in color and giving the plumage a scale-like appearance. In contrast to the tajazu huckuckers, the black chest band is only weak or not present. The iris is red, around the eye there is a cobalt blue featherless area. The beak is green-yellowish.
distribution and habitat
The common cuckoo occurs in central Brazil along the Amazon and inhabits tropical rainforests . Due to the ongoing destruction of the habitat, the common ground cuckoo is classified as endangered by the IUCN .
Way of life
The common cuckoo follows, like other representatives of the genus Neomorphus , wandering ants . The composition of the food spectrum is not known. Like most other ground cuckoos, it is probably not a breeding parasite .
Systematics
The scale ground cuckoo is listed by some authors as Neomorphus geoffroyi squamiger as a subspecies of the Tagus cuckoo . The delimitation as a separate species is made due to differences in plumage color. It is controversial whether there is a contact zone with different subspecies of the Tajazu Cuckoo. The exact system needs further research.
