Óscar Pino Santos (born April 23, 1928 in Banes , † January 17, 2004 in Havana ) was a Cuban journalist and diplomat .

Life

Óscar Pino Santos graduated from high school in Havana and began studying law at the University of Havana , but later graduated in journalism . He worked as a journalist for the Communist Party of Cuba organ Hoy and the Canal 2 television channel .

After Fidel Castro came to power in January 1959, Pino belonged to a group of confidants convened by Castro in confidence, who drafted the land reform law without the knowledge of the responsible minister of agriculture. By decree of the revolutionary government led by Castro, the reform came into force in May 1959 as one of the central projects of the Cuban revolution .

From November 24, 1960 to May 22, 1967 Pino Santos was accredited as envoy extraordinary and ministre plénipotentiaire in Beijing and in the same function in Phnom Penh . In the 1970s, when the movement of the non-aligned states , including Cuba as the leading government, lost its role, Santos was a frequent participant in international conferences. During this period he held numerous lectures and seminars against the teaching of the Chicago Boys . Santos represented the positions of the Cuban government at Jawaharlal Nehru University and was a faculty member at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University . He has taught at numerous academic institutions in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

At the conference of the non-aligned in Colombo 1976 he was elected chairman of the Asociación de Economistas del Tercer Mundo until 1980 . In Havana he founded and directed the Centro de Estudios sobre América (CEA) and the Centro de Investigaciones de la Economía Mundial (CIEM). From 1981 he was assessor at the Cuban State Council.

In addition to his historical activities, he also wrote history in numerous publications.
