The tailed tetra ( Hemigrammus unilineatus (with a line)) is a freshwater fish widespread in northern South America . The distribution area includes the Amazon basin , south to the Rio Guaporé (Bolivia), the coastal rivers of Venezuela , the three Guayanas and Trinidad . Hemigrammus unilineatus is the type species of the genus Hemigrammus .
features
It grows to a size of 5 to 5.3 cm. Its body is typical of the genus, elongated, slightly higher than other species of the genus and laterally flattened. Its color is translucent greenish gray. A shiny gold longitudinal band runs along the flanks over the translucent spine. Occasionally you can also see a dark shoulder mark. The fins are colorless, the caudal fin occasionally reddish. The front edge of the dorsal and anal fin are first white, then black.

Way of life
The fish live in ponds, trenches, slow-flowing streams, both in clear and murky water, in open and shady areas. They feed on small crustaceans, insects and mollusks .
