features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth ranges from 25 to 32 millimeters. Light brown, light gray or pink tones predominate as the basic color. There is a narrow, dark transverse band near the root of the forewings. The basal region is delimited by a slightly curved, black-brown transverse band. At the front edge there is a large, dark triangular spot that merges into a jagged line and becomes thinner and thinner towards the inner edge. This line pattern makes the butterflies unmistakable. The hind wings are brown-gray and show an indistinct transverse line.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are colored green and have a dark red mark on the back, which often forms a diamond-shaped spot at each segment incision . Sometimes the spots are only reduced to the areas behind the head and the rearmost pair of legs.

Doll

The slender doll is brown in color and characterized by two diverging tips and four fine bristles on the cremaster rolled up at the tip .

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed from North Africa and Spain across Western and Central Europe including the British Isles eastward to the Altai and the Black Sea and north to Fennoscandinavia . In the mountains it rises to the tree line . The black banded rose leaf tensioner prefers sunny slopes, hedge areas, bushy heather edges as well as gardens and parklands.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in one generation from late March to early June. During the day, they like to rest on tree trunks or wooden fences. At night they visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars are found from May to July. Their diet includes the leaves of various types of roses ( Rosa ), with flowers and young leaves being preferred. The species overwinters as a pupa, among other things in the muck of old rose bushes.

Danger

The black banded rose leaf tensioner occurs in different numbers in the German federal states and is listed on the red list of endangered species on the warning list.
