The black cereal sawfly ( Dolerus nitens ) is a plant wasp from the family of the sawfly (Tenthredinidae).
features
The species reaches a body length (head – wing end) of 9 to 10 millimeters. The plant wasp is completely black in color. It has 9-part antennae . The wings have a characteristic veining . There is a black wing mark on the outer edge of the wing .
distribution
The species was originally distributed in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. It was introduced into North America and is now also widespread there.
Way of life
The wasps can be seen very early in the year (early March) - even before the other species of the same genus . They suck the nectar from hawthorns ( Crataegus ), Rhaphiolepis and willows . The larvae are found on the leaves of sour grass (Cyperaceae) and sweet grass (Poaceae). Pupation takes place in the ground.
