The black lucky spider ( Erigone atra ), also often called dwarf spider , is a species of spider from the subfamily of dwarf spiders within the family of canopy spiders (Linyphiidae).
Appearance
The black lucky spider is only about 1.8 to 2.8 millimeters in size. Front body ( prosoma ) and abdomen ( opisthosoma ) are uniformly dark brown, almost black. The abdomen is covered with short hair, while the front body is hairless and has a smooth, shiny surface. In the male, the eye region is greatly increased. The legs are uniformly brown in color in both sexes.
Erigone atra is very similar to other species of the genus Erigone and species of the related genera. It can only be reliably differentiated from these on the basis of the genital organs.
Way of life and distribution
The black lucky spider is widespread around the world and contributes significantly to Indian summer with tens of thousands of individuals moving through the air . Black lucky spiders can be drifted with the wind. To do this, they climb up a somewhat elevated location en masse, let a thread emerge and wait for the wind to take them away.
Mature animals occur all year round, including autumn and winter. The black lucky spider is one of the most common species. It can be found almost everywhere (with the exception of very dry areas) - in cities as well as in the mountains, but especially on coasts, inland waters, moors and wet meadows .
