description

Widdringtonia schwarzii grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 17 to 40 meters. The thin, red-gray bark is fibrous and flakes off in scales.

Young, needle-like leaves are up to 20 millimeters long. Older leaves are 3 to 4 millimeters long and are arranged opposite to each other on the branches.

The male cones reach a length of up to 2 millimeters and are on short branches. The approximately spherical female cones are about 2 centimeters thick and are dark brown in color as they mature. Each cone consists of four woody cone scales, which have a rough, warty surface. The cones of a tree can be in different stages of development. The flattened seeds have a showy wing.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Widdringtonia schwarzii is in the South African province of Eastern Cape . It includes the Baviaanskloof Mountains and the Kooga Mountains there .

Widdringtonia schwarzii thrives at altitudes of 70 to 1220 meters. The species grows mainly in ravines, in locations with little rainfall.

Systematics

The first description as Callitris schwarzii was in 1905 by Rudolf Marloth in Botanical Yearbooks for Systematics, Plant History and Plant Geography , Volume 36, page 206. Maxwell Tylden Masters transferred the species in 1905 in Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany , Volume 37, page 269 as Widdringtonia schwarzii into the genus Widdringtonia .

Hazard and protection

Widdringtonia schwarzii is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List . All accessible, larger trees were felled or destroyed by fire, so that today larger specimens only exist in inaccessible places. Natural regeneration is low, making the species prone to natural fires. The stocks within the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area are protected from logging.
