The black chipmunk ( Lariscus ) are a common type of squirrel in Southeast Asia . They are little-known inhabitants of tropical rainforests who inhabit mountainous areas between 900 and 1500 meters above sea level. Although they can climb trees, they usually stay near the ground. Here they look for fruits and nuts. They build their nests in hollow tree trunks.

features

The three-striped squirrel, the most common species, has a head body length of 18 cm, plus a 10 cm tail. Mostly its fur is gray-brown, the flanks yellowish and the underside white. A total of three black vertical stripes run across the back and top of the flanks. Some individual animals deviate from this typical color pattern; they can be solid brown with no visible stripes.

Systematics

The genus of black chipmunk was described in 1909 by Oldfield Thomas and Robert Charles Wroughton . There are four types:

The four chipmunk is sometimes placed in its own genus Paralariscus .

Hazard and protection

The IUCN classifies the four chipmunk as endangered. The other types are quite common.
