The four chipmunk ( Lariscus hosei ) is a type of squirrel from the genus of the black chipmunk ( Lariscus ). It is endemic to Borneo . The specific epithet honors the British zoologist Charles Hose .

features

The four-striped squirrel is a medium-sized squirrel with a head body length of 172 to 192 mm. The tail length is 110 to 142 mm, the hind leg length 42 to 46 mm and the weight 145 to 215 grams. The back and the flanks are characterized by four black stripes. The two stripes in the middle are separated by a sand-colored center line. The inner and outer stripes are separated by very light lines. The head, neck, flanks and the outer sides of the legs are gray-olive. The throat, abdomen and the inner sides of the legs are cream-colored and mostly fox-red washed out. The tail is orange-gray with black ringlets. The female has three pairs of teats .

Occurrence and habitat

The four chipmunk lives in primary forests at altitudes of up to 1,000 m in the states of Sarawak and Sabah and in northern Kalimantan Timur on Borneo .

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the four chipmunk. It is diurnal and ground dweller. The diet consists of insects, fruits and roots.

Existence and endangerment

The population size of this species is unknown. After the IUCN classified it as endangered (vulnerable) in 1996, it was downgraded to the warning list (near threatened) in 2008. The greatest threat comes from clearing by the timber industry.
