overview

The society goes back to a Swiss national section of the " International Music Society " founded in 1899 . In 1915 the Swiss section became independent ("New Swiss Music Society") and in 1934 gave itself its current name.

It has set itself the task of maintaining and promoting all activities that are primarily in the interest of Swiss musicological research. The company sees itself as a »forum for scientific contacts and the exchange of experiences, ideas and new research results«, which it also makes available to a larger audience.

Her tasks include the publication of music magazines such as the communications of the Swiss Music Research Society (directed by Willi Schuh , 1934-1936), the publications of the Swiss Music Research Society ( Haupt / Lang , 1952 ff.), The Swiss Music Monuments ( Bärenreiter / Amadeus 1955 ff.), the collection of articles on Swiss Contributions to Musicology (Haupt, 1972–1980), the Swiss Yearbook for Musicology (Haupt / Lang, 1924–1938 and 1981 ff.) and the edition series Music from Swiss Monasteries (Kunzelmann, 2007 ff.) . In 1998 the Swiss music newspaper became the organ of the Swiss Music Research Society.

The company also enables Switzerland to participate in the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) in Frankfurt am Main and at the Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM). She is a cultural studies member of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences .
