The floating marigold ( Caltha natans ) is a species of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae).

features

The floating marigold is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 50 centimeters. The stem has elongated limbs, is creeping or flooding, and roots at the nodes. The leaf blade is up to 2.5 inches wide. The flowers are 8 to 13 millimeters in diameter. The bracts are 4 to 7 millimeters long and colored white or pink. The 20 to 55 carpels are about 3.2 to 6.5 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

Occurrence

The floating marigold is found in cool central and northwestern North America, eastern Siberia, the Far East and Mongolia on wet meadows, swamps and shallow waters.

The floating marigold is rarely used as an ornamental plant for pond edges.
