Sclerocactus brevihamatus is a species of plant in the genus Sclerocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). An English common name is "Tobusch Fishhook Cactus".
description
Sclerocactus brevihamatus usually grows individually with spherical to obovate, somewhat dark green shoots that reach heights of 5 to 10 centimeters with a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeters. There are ten to twelve ribs 6 to 12 millimeters high , which are humped and have a furrowed fur. The mostly four flattened central spines are whitish and 2.5 to 4.5 inches long. The bottom of them sticks out horizontally and is hook-shaped. The seven to 14 circular, spread out radial spines are white. They have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters.
The funnel-shaped flowers are greenish white to light yellow or creamy white and tinted purple. They are 2.5 to 3 inches long. The thin-walled, almost bare fruits are about 1.5 centimeters long.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Sclerocactus brevihamatus is common in southern Texas . Sclerocactus brevihamatus subsp. tobuschii is endemic to the Edwards Plateau .
It was first described as Echinocactus brevihamatus in 1856 by George Engelmann . David Richard Hunt placed them in the genus Sclerocactus in 1991 . Synonyms are Ancistrocactus brevihamatus (Engelm.) Britton & Rose , Roseia brevihamata (Engelm.) Frič and Pediocactus brevihamatus (Engelm.) Halda .
The following subspecies are distinguished:
- Sclerocactus brevihamatus subsp. brevihamatus
- Sclerocactus brevihamatus subsp. tobuschii
Sclerocactus brevihamatus subsp. tobuschii is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
