Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. cloverae is an endangered subspecies of the Sclerocactus whipplei plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The name refers to Elzada U. Clover who conducted field studies in the Colorado River area in 1941. English common names are "Aztec Cactus" and "Clover´s Cactus".

description

Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. cloverae grows individually spherical to elongated. It becomes 2 to 25 cm long and 2 to 20 cm in diameter. The purple tubular flowers are 2 to 4 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm wide. The species is able to flower in its early youth stage. The flowering time is in May.

distribution

Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. cloverae grows on the Colorado Plateau in the Rocky Mountains Montane Forest in the border area of New Mexico and Colorado in a limited area on flat, sandy or stony hills at altitudes of 1500 to 2200 meters and is there associated with Escobaria vivipara subsp. arizonica , Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. gonacanthus , various other cactus species and Yucca baileyi .

The description as Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. cloverae was made in 2007 by Fritz Hochstätter.
