description

The spherical, ovoid to cylindrical growing Sclerocactus whipplei reaches heights of growth of 5 to 14 cm and a diameter of 4 to 12 cm. The tubular flowers have a length of 2 cm to 3 cm and a diameter of 1.5 cm to 3 cm. The bracts are usually yellow, rarely white or pink. The flowers open late in the day. The flowering period begins in mid-May.

Sclerocactus whipplei is closely related to Sclerocactus spinosior , but a representative of the Parviflori section . Sclerocactus whipplei develops the typical paper thorn in its early youth stage and the first flowers are already forming. The flowering behavior is similar to that of Sclerocactus spinosior .

The subspecies Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. cloverae and Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. busekii are endangered.

Occurrence

Sclerocactus whipplei grows in the Great Basin Desert in Arizona and Utah in red sand and on stony slopes in sparse "conifers" at altitudes between 1500 and 1900 meters.

This species is often associated with Sclerocactus parviflorus , Navajoa peeblesiana , Toumeya papyracantha , Escobaria missouriensis subsp. navajoensis , Echinocereus fendleri , Yucca angustissima , Yucca baileyi and various Opuntia species.

Systematics

The first description by George Engelmann and John Milton Bigelow under the name Echinocactus whipplei was published in 1857 (preprint 1856). The American botanists Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put in 1922 in the species as Sclerocactus whipplei in the genus Sclerocactus . Another synonym is Sclerocactus whipplei var. Pygmaeus by Robert Hibbs Peebles .

According to Fritz Hochstätter, the following subspecies are distinguished:
