Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. busekii is an extremely endangered subspecies of the Sclerocactus whipplei plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The name refers to Josef Busek an expert of the genera Sclerocactus and Pediocactus , who did valuable field work in the 1970s. English common names are "Busek's Cactus" and "Paria Plateau Cactus".
description
Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. busekii grows individually spherical to elongated. It becomes 4 to 8 cm long and 3 to 5 cm in diameter. The yellow tubular flowers are 2 to 3 cm long and wide. The subspecies is able to flower in the early youth stage. It opens the flowers late in the day, while Sclerocactus spinosior opens the flowers in the morning. The flowering period is from April to May.
distribution
Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. busekii growing endemic to the Great Basin Desert in Arizona in a limited area on flat, sandy or rocky hills at altitudes from 1600 to 1900 meters. There it is associated with Pediocactus paradinei , Escobaria missouriensis subsp. marstonii , Escobaria vivipara subsp. kaibabensis , various types of cactus and Yucca baccata .
Systematics
The description as Sclerocactus whipplei subsp. busekii was made in 1995 by Fritz Hochstätter.
Synonyms are Sclerocactus pubispinus var. Sileri L.D.Benson (1969) and Sclerocactus sileri (LDBenson) KDHeil & JMPorter (1994).
