Escobaria missouriensis is a species of plant in the genus Escobaria from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Escobaria missouriensis is hardy in Central Europe. English common names are "Missouri Pincushion", "Cream Cactus" and "Ball Cactus".

The many-sprout plants are usually branched and form large cushions. The spherical, dense mandrels covered strains reach stature heights between 2.5 and 5 centimeters and a diameter from 3.8 to 10 centimeters. The warts are elongated and up to 18 millimeters long. The 10 to 20 yellowish radial spines are very close and cover the plant body. Later, the 1 to 2 centimeter long radial spines turn gray, central spines are not formed.
The greenish yellow to yellow or pink colored flowers are 2.5 to 6.2 inches long and in diameter. The red fruits are 1 to 2 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Escobaria missouriensis is distributed in the United States in the states of Idaho , North Dakota , Kansas , Arizona, and New Mexico, and in Mexico in the states of Coahuila and Nuevo León .
It was first described in 1818 by Nuttall as Cactus mammillaris . However, this description was not valid (nom. Illeg. ICBN -Article 53.1), so that in 1823 the first valid description as Mammillaria missouriensis followed by Sweet . Other synonyms are:
- Coryphantha missouriensis (Sweet) Britton & Rose (1913)
- Neobesseya missouriensis Britton & Rose (1923)
In 1978 the species was recombined by David Richard Hunt to Escobaria missouriensis .
There are two subspecies:
- Escobaria missouriensis subsp. asperispina (Boed.) NPTaylor
- Escobaria missouriensis subsp. missouriensis
A synonym for the subspecies Escobaria missouriensis subsp. missouriensis is Mammillaria nuttallii Engelm. (1849).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
