Sclerolaena is a genus in the subfamily of Camphorosmoideae within the family of amaranthaceae (Amaranthaceae). The 62 to 66 species arenativeto Australia .

description

Sclerolaena species grow perennial herbaceous plants or shrubs . The alternate, spirally or two lines on stalks arranged leaves are simple, often fleshy or succulent . The leaf margins are smooth. Stipules are missing.

The flowers are mostly hermaphroditic or, more rarely, functionally unisexual. If they are unisexual, the plants can be single-sexed ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ). The sessile flowers stand alone or in pairs in leaf axils. The small flowers are five-fold. There is only one circle with three to five urn-shaped or calyx-shaped fused bloom bracts. The three to five stamens are free from each other, but can be fused with the bracts. Two to five carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. Hermaphrodite and female flowers have a pistil with two to three styluses and two to three stigmas.

The solitary fruit is the Utriculus characteristic of the Camphorosmoideae , which is enveloped by the enlarged perianth . This forms wings that arise at the base of the perianthlobes. There are zero to nine, usually two to six, thorns on the fruit.

distribution

The genus Sclerolaena is native to Australia with around 62 , one of them in Tasmania . The Sclerolaena species are widespread on heavy soils, especially in semi-arid to arid areas ( semi-arid to arid ) and are characteristic of the dry vegetation of the Chenopodiac bushes .

Systematics

The genus Sclerolaena was established in 1810 by Robert Brown in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae , p. 410. As Lectotypusart in 1934 sclerolaena uniflora R.Br. by Ulbrich in Nat. Plant family , 2nd edition, 16c, p. 533. A homonym is Sclerolaena A. Camus in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France , 72, 1925, p. 622. A synonym is Coilocarpus F. Muell. ex Domin . The botanical generic name Sclerolaena refers to the hard "coating" of the fruit and is derived from the Greek words skleros for hard and chlaina for to cover.

The genus Sclerolaena belongs to the subfamily Camphorosmoideae , which previously belonged to the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae), within the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae).

There are around 62 to 66 species (almost complete list):
