Scolopostethus decoratus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .

features

The bugs are 3.5 to 4.2 millimeters long. The species of the genus Scolopostethus are difficult to determine. They have one large and several small thorns on the underside of the thighs ( femora ) of the front legs. They also have a large pale spot in the middle of the margin of the pronotum . Scolopostethus decoratus is easy to identify , however, because it has a relatively colorful pattern and black antennae . Only the second member is basally bright. Almost all individuals are fully winged (macropter).

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe and North Africa, but is absent in the far north. In the east the distribution extends over the Black Sea region and Asia Minor to Central Asia. It is widespread in Germany, but more common in the north than in the south. In suitable habitats it is not uncommon in heather -Heiden frequently. It is probably also common in Austria, but so far there is only a little evidence. In the Alps, it rises to around 1000 meters above sea level. Open and partially shaded areas are populated in dry habitats with sandy and calcareous soil, but also moist habitats such as bog heaths. The species prefers the former habitats.

Way of life

The animals suckle on the seeds of the heather family (Ericaceae) such. B. Common heather ( Calluna vulgaris ), heather ( Erica ) and blueberries ( Vaccinium ). The animals are mostly on the ground, but adults can also be found on the plants. Sucking is also documented on the seeds of other plants and also on woody plants and very rarely on dead or living insects. The species forms at least one generation per year in northwest Germany. Mating and subsequent oviposition on the food plants takes place from the end of April to June, the nymphs can be observed from June to August. The adults of the new generation appear from August. An incomplete second generation whose nymphs hibernate is only formed in very favorable years. If temperatures are favorable, individual adults can also be active over the winter.
