Scott Eric Denmark (born June 17, 1953 in Lynbrook (New York) ) is an American chemist ( organic chemistry ).

Denmark studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1974 with Richard H. Holm ( ferredoxin analogues) and Daniel S. Kemp (functionalized cyclophanes ) and received his doctorate in 1980 with Albert Eschenmoser at the ETH Zurich ( On the stereochemistry of the S N `reaction ). He became Assistant Professor in 1980, Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor of Chemistry in 1987 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . From 1991 he was Reynold C. Fuson Professor .

He deals with the development of new reactions for organic synthesis. For example, he developed the method of Lewis base activation by Lewis acids for the enantioselective formation of CC compounds, dealt with Nazarov cyclization in organosilicon compounds and intramolecular cycloaddition of nitro- olefins .

Denmark was awarded the Paracelsus Prize for 2020 . In 2019 he received the Ryōji Noyori Prize , in 2007 the Prelog Medal and in 2003 the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry . He was Sloan Research Fellow , Arthur C. Cope Scholar, Eli Lilly Fellow, received the Humboldt Research Award (1990), the Robert Robinson Award , the Pedler Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Yamada Koga Award (2006) and a NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2018 to the National Academy of Sciences .

He is Editor-in-Chief of Organic Reactions , Associate Editor of Organic Syntheses, Organic Letters , the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis, and Topics in Stereochemistry.

As a hobby he drives car races.
