Scott Johnson (* 1952 ) is an American composer.

Johnson studied music and fine arts at the University of Wisconsin . In 1975 he went to New York, where he worked on multimedia installations and performances. From his experiments with the combination of tape recordings and electronic instruments, John Somebody (1980–82) emerged, a work in which voice recordings form the source of the instrumental music. Using a similar technique, compositions such as How It Happens , Convertible Debts and The Value of People and Things were created .

With the adoption of instruments from rock music, the use of tape recordings and electronic elements in traditional compositions, Johnson is one of the pioneers in the fusion of pop and classical music. He has received grants from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Guggenheim Foundation , a Koussevitsky Award , two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and five awards from the New York State Council on the Arts . He was commissioned to compose by the American Composer's Orchestra ( Mind Out Of Matter for Alarm Will Sound , Stalking Horse ), the Cygnus Ensemble ( Bowery Haunt , Last Time ), the Kronos Quartet ( The Illusion of Guidance for the Bang On A Can All-Stars) , How It Happens , Bird in the Domes ) and singer Dora Ohrstein ( I Am New York City ). He also composed the music for Paul Schrader's film Patty Hearst and the ballet music Before Winter for the Boston Ballet . As a performing musician, he has performed in the Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall , Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center , at the Music's Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy , at Yale University and at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival .
