The Scott Joplin House State Historic Site in St. Louis is the former residence and memorial of ragtime musician Scott Joplin, who died in 1917 . The state park is 1.5 hectares.
When Scott Joplin and his wife Belle moved into the brick building after the success of the Maple Leaf Rag in 1900, the residential area was predominantly populated with Afro-Americans and German immigrants. There was also a honky tonk pub nearby . In the early years he composed some of his most famous pieces of music on Morgan Street: The Entertainer , Elite Syncopations , March Majestic and Ragtime Dance . His first work, A Guest of Honor, has been lost. In 1907 Joplin moved on to New York.
In December 1976, the building was entered on the National Register of Historic Places and received National Historic Landmark status . In 1984 the previous owner transferred the property to the Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks .
