In the case of spin-off series of films or other series ( e.g. Star Trek , Stargate ), the story editors must ensure across series or film that characters, locations and storylines complement each other and that technical or geographical information or character details do not differ from the already created facts differ.

The task of the story editor is usually taken on by trained or prospective scriptwriters who can become authors or co-authors themselves in the course of a longer series.

The story editors are often used on a staggered basis . This means that at the start of next season ( English Season new people exercising) the function and that the old in the hierarchy ascend the series. Either they are (to senior author consultants english executive script consultants ) or equal to authors.

This profession is rarely used in German-speaking countries, as film productions are often more manageable or only one or two authors work on a series. Instead, one of the main actors in series is often listed as a "script consultant", since the actors themselves have often been involved in a series for a long time and therefore have a good overview of past developments in the roles. Examples are Hendrik Duryn  for Der Lehrer  or Erdoğan Atalay for Alarm for Cobra 11 .
