Ó hAilpín, the son of a Fijian mother and an Irish father, grew up in Cork, Ireland . He quickly learned the two Gaelic national sports, hurling and Gaelic football, and went through all the youth teams of the local club Cork GAA in both sports . After a successful time with the U21 teams, Ó hAilpín made his debut in 1996 in the men's hurling team at Cork GAA. He soon established himself as one of the best "number 7" (left-back) in Ireland. Three years later, Ó hAilpín also made his debut on the Gaelic Football men's team and became a feared left-back there too.
