Haasts Bluff is a settlement of the Luritja and Pintupi aborigines, which they now call Ikuntji . It is located about 230 kilometers west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory in the MacDonnell Ranges .

history

In 1872 Ernest Giles came to this region and named it after the geologist Julius von Haast . In 1905 there was a cattle ranch and in 1941 this settlement became an Aboriginal reservation .

Artist colony

When the Australians wanted to assimilate the Aborigines in the late 1950s , Aborigines from the Western Dessert cultural area were deported to Papunya . Different tribes were brought together in this place. This created problems in living together, which in the early 1970s led to many Aborigines returning to their ancestral lands. The Pintupi and the Luritja went to Haasts Bluff. The Ikuntji Women's Center was founded there in 1991 , an artist colony run by Aboriginal women and currently employing fifteen women artists. The most important artists from Haasts Bluff include Marlee Naparrula, Narputta Nangala, Daisy Napaltjarri Jugadai, Alice Nampitjinpa, Eunice Napanangka Jack, Mitjili Naparrula and Long Tom Tjapanangka.
