biography

Eugène Fournier was born on December 28, 1871 in Saint-Brieuc, Côtes-du-Nord. He studied in Bayonne and Marseille and obtained a PhD in geology. From 1896 to 1935 he taught geology at the University of Besançon . From 1918 to 1921 he was dean at the Faculty of Science.

His main work were the geological maps of Provence , the Jura , Quercy and the Grands Causses . He showed that various theories on tectonics contradicted Nappism , the forerunner of today's theory on tectonics. His studies and work made him a pioneer of hydrogeology in karst areas . In 1905 he was able to prove that a seeping brook had a connection to the spring de l'Acier, 1 km away, and that the generally expected water filtering did not take place. This inspired Édouard Alfred Martel to start the initiative for the Martel law, for the protection of groundwater.

He developed his findings with his students during field research. From 1898 he was the first to explore around 1200 caves in the entire Jura. He published numerous writings and several books and thus presented a comprehensive inventory that is still referenced today.

He died in Besançon on April 17, 1941.
