Sean Varah

Sean Anthony Varah (born December 21, 1968 in Madison, Wisconsin ) is a Canadian composer and cellist .

Live and act

Sean Varah grew up in Vancouver , he studied music at Stanford University and Columbia University , where Mario Davidovsky was his main teacher. He trained as a cellist with Judith Fraser at the Vancouver Academy of Music , Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi at the University of Western Ontario and Eric Wilson at the University of British Columbia . In 1994 he founded the Harvard Computer Music Center , where he taught until 1997.

In addition to purely instrumental works, Varah composed works for orchestral and electroacoustic instruments, using both analogue tape and digital computer technology. Burning , an orchestral work commissioned by the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra , premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1993 and, along with the Aria for tape and cello, was his contribution to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Young Composers Competition . After being performed by the National Arts Center Orchestra under the direction of Mario Bernardi , the work received the National Arts Center People's Choice Award .

Slipping Image for mixed quartet and tape was released on CD in 1998 by the International Computer Music Association . In the same year Shauna Rolston played the world premiere of the piece Borderline for tape and cello, which she commissioned. Varah u. a. from the Canada Council , the Fromm Foundation at Harvard , the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Empyrean Ensemble .
