Seba (Bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seba ( Hebrew סְבָא, Ancient Greek σαβα Saba ) is in the Old Testament, a son of Cush and progenitor of Sebäer.

Seba as a person

According to Gen 10.7  EU, Seba is the firstborn son of Kush. His brothers are Hawila , Sabta , Ragma , Sabtecha and Nimrod . Kusch himself is a son of Ham and grandson of Noah .

Seba as a common name

The settlement area of the Sebaeans cannot yet be localized. Since Seba is mentioned in Isa 43.3  EU and 45.14 EU together with Kush (Nubia, in the north of today's Sudan) and Egypt, a settlement in northeastern Africa would be conceivable. The fact that Seba and Saba can hardly be differentiated from one another (the Septuagint gives both names with σαβα Saba ) can also speak for a localization in southern Arabia.

Isaiah describes the Sebaeans as being tall in 45:14. From the perspective of the prophet they are considered to be a distant people who, according to his promise , will submit to YHWH .
