Sebastián de Covarrubias y Orozco (* 1539 in Toledo , † 1613 in Cuenca ) was a Spanish cleric, emblematic , lexicographer, Romanist and Hispanist . He is best known for his tesoro (Latin thesaurus ).

life and work

Covarrubias came from an important family that included Alonso de Covarrubias , Diego de Covarrubias y Leyva and Antonio Covarrubias y Leyva . From 1565 to 1573 he was at the University of Salamanca , then court chaplain to King Philip II of Spain and finally canon of the Cathedral of Cuenca for 30 years .

In 1605, Covarrubias began to compose the first defining dictionary of Spanish, which appeared in 1611 under the title Tesoro de la lengua castellana, o española , a year before the Accademia della Crusca Italian dictionary . Covarrubias was particularly interested in the definition of the words (17,000 definitions), their etymology and the encyclopedic information.

In 1674 Benito Remigio Noydens (1630–1685) published an expanded edition of the Tesoro , which was published in 1943 by Martí de Riquer (numerous editions). Editions by Felipe CR Maldonado, Georgina Dopico and Jacques Lezra, as well as by Ignacio Arellano and Rafael Zafra have recently been added.
