Sebastian Church

The Sebastianskirche is a Protestant church building in Bahnbrücken , a district of Kraichtal in the district of Karlsruhe in northern Baden-Württemberg .

The church is an externally simple, single-nave church with a straight choir closure. Presumably, it was built in the 15th century as a small chapel by the wealthy barons von Serien and Strahlberg von Schriesheim and decorated with so-called Secco wall paintings, which were probably whitewashed during the Reformation .

The first extensions were made in the 18th century; the chapel was enlarged and a turret was added on the west side. In 1911 the wall paintings were rediscovered and exposed. The paintings cover the choir and south walls and show biblical figures, saints, bishops and the martyrdom of Sebastian , from whom the church takes its name, as well as a wall-high picture of Mary's coat.

Eighteen years later, in 1929, the turret on the west side was torn down, the church was expanded to the west and north, and a new tower was added on the east side, in which a sacristy was set up on the ground floor . At the same time, the organ gallery on the east side was removed and the organ built into the northern extension.

From the middle of the 20th century, the church was renovated at certain intervals. At the end of the 1960s, it was given a new exterior plaster. The heating was renewed in 1976 and in 1978 the sacristy in the tower was renovated. In 1983/84 the church was renovated inside. The wall paintings were professionally restored and refreshed. After the previous organ was badly damaged by the interior renovation, the church finally received a new organ in 1986.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the roof was re-covered, and the tower cock was also replaced. Finally, the church received a new exterior plaster, so that the church shines in new splendor today.
