Zebulon Orlew ( Hebrew זבולון אורלב; * November 9, 1945 in Rechovot ) is a religious - nationalist Israeli politician who was a member of the National Religious Party ( Mafdal ) in the Knesset from March 3, 2003 to November 11, 2004, and Minister of Welfare and Social Services from 2005 to 2008 served as chairman of the National Religious Party .

Life

Orlew is considered a war hero who was awarded the Itur ha-mofet for his achievements in the Yom Kippur War . He got into the Knesset as a member of the National Religious Party in the 1999 elections . After being re-elected in the 2003 elections, Orlew was appointed Minister of Welfare and Social Services in the second government of Ariel Sharon .

When the coalition threatened to break up over the Gaza withdrawal plan , Orlew led the camp within the national religious party that approved the plan. Thereupon the party chairman Ephraim Eitam called him a " Meimadnik ". After Eitam and Yitzchak Levy left the government in 2004, Orlew and other party members refused to leave the government. Orlew then became party leader of the National Religious Party. The former party chairman Eitam and Levy left the party and founded the Achi , which eventually merged with the National Union .

In the 2006 elections Orlew was re-elected. Before the 2009 elections , the National Religious Party disbanded, and party members joined the religious-Zionist HaBajit haJehudi . Orlew was put in second place on the electoral list and received his seat in the Knesset again.

Orlew is known for several controversial declarations and legislative initiatives. In 2009, for example, the Knesset discussed a legislative initiative by Orlew, according to which anyone should be prosecuted, who denied that Israel is a Jewish and democratic state ( Hebrew מדינה יהודית ודמוקרטית) be. The bill was not immediately rejected and passed the introductory reading. Orlew has been criticized for a legislative initiative requiring divorced fathers to support their children until they reach the age of 22.

In 2012 he called for the construction of the 3rd Temple in Jerusalem. He also called for legislation to protect the construction project from prosecution and the "hostile, secular, left-wing" media.

He also called in a legislative initiative to disregard the Supreme Court's decision , which ordered the demolition of five buildings in a Jewish settlement.
