The seca GmbH & Co. KG is a world leader in medical measuring and weighing. Due to its high degree of specialization, it is one of the hidden champions . seca develops, produces and sells scales , length measuring devices and bioimpedance measuring units for measuring body composition. With a market share of 60%, the company is the world market leader for medical measuring and weighing. Its approx. 100 different medical products are exported to more than 110 countries. Head office is in Hamburg-Eilbek , with branches in Austria, Poland, France, England, Switzerland, Japan, China, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Finland, Latin America, Southeast Asia and the United States.
Foundation and company history
In 1840 the independent master locksmith ACC Joachims began to build scales in Hamburg. He had previously acquired the necessary knowledge for this from the Strasbourg mechanic and monk Friedrich Alois Quintenz, who invented the decimal scale in 1821 . In the next thirty years the locksmith's workshop developed into a small factory. When Joachims died in 1874, the importance of the factory declined. Only Frederik Vogel revived the business activities. The businessman acquired the scale factory in 1888, expanded the product range and introduced the brand name seca, which he had protected in 1897. The name is derived from the Latin secare for cutting, because cutting edge refers to the central support surface of the balance beam. The smaller this range, the more precise the measuring accuracy of a mechanical balance.
In 1934 Frederik Vogel handed the management over to his son Robert. This led the company through the Second World War and began with the successful reconstruction immediately after the end of the war. When he died in 1966, his son Sönke Vogel joined the company.
In 1970 Sönke Vogel decided on a new company concept: the concentration on medical measuring and weighing. Since then, seca has been manufacturing products that are required for diagnosis and therapy in medicine in order to be able to precisely determine the weight, height and body composition of patients. The body composition is analyzed using bioimpedance analysis units , which use low current to analyze essential parameters such as fat mass and fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass, visceral fat, total body water / extracellular water and the phase angle. The range has been expanded and is sold nationally and internationally.
On March 31, 2010 Sönke Vogel withdrew from the operative business and switched to the company's advisory board. Since then, the management has been in the hands of his sons Robert M. Vogel (Sales & Marketing) and Frederik Vogel (Technology & Development) as well as Thomas Wessels (Finance & Internal Services).
