The Hebrew personal name "Zechariah" has been handed down in two different spellings: זְכַרְיָהוּ zəkharjāhû andזְכַרְיָה zəkharjāh . It is a verb sentence name, consisting of subject and predicate. Subject (and at the same time theophoric element) is a form of " YHWH " (יָהוּ jāhû orיָה jāh ), the predicate derives from the verb rootזכר zkr , German , 'remember' . The name can be translated as “YHWH remembered”. The Septuagint gives the name as Ζαχαριας Zacharias , the Vulgate as Zaccharias .
Biblical narration
The source for his rule is 2 Kings 15.8–11 EU . Thereafter, Zechariah, the son and successor of Jeroboam II, reigned in Samaria for six months . His reign began in the 38th year of King Azariah of Judah. Since , according to the report, he was not well disposed to YHWH and “did what displeased the Lord” (that is, worshiped other gods ), Shallum , the son of Jabesh, started a conspiracy and killed him in Jibleam . That the line from Jehu on the throne of Israel would only last four generations was prophesied to Israel ( 2 Kings 10:30 EU ). Shallum became king in Zechariah's place.
