Sechium form a genus in the family of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucurbitaceae). The plants produce fleshy fruits. All wild species grow in Mexico or Central America . The chayote ( Sechium edule ) iscultivatedin large parts of the subtropics and tropics .
Systematics
The genus Sechium includes about eleven species , the classification of which has changed repeatedly over the past few decades. Studies of the 1990s consistently divide the genus into two sections, Sechium and Frantzia . The two sections differ in the morphology of the floral nectaries and the arrangement of the stamens .
