Sechium form a genus in the family of the Cucurbitaceae (Cucurbitaceae). The plants produce fleshy fruits. All wild species grow in Mexico or Central America . The chayote ( Sechium edule ) iscultivatedin large parts of the subtropics and tropics .

Systematics

The genus Sechium includes about eleven species , the classification of which has changed repeatedly over the past few decades. Studies of the 1990s consistently divide the genus into two sections, Sechium and Frantzia . The two sections differ in the morphology of the floral nectaries and the arrangement of the stamens .

  • Sechium edule ssp. edule : Cultivated form that is grown in America, Africa and Asia. The plant was known to the Aztecs and Mayans before the colonization by the Spanish and Portuguese and was cultivated by them.
