Habitat and way of life

The Sechura fox occurs in deserts with sparse vegetation, in agricultural areas and in dry forests and is primarily nocturnal. The animals spend the day in a hiding place between rocks. Sechura foxes are omnivores, but prefer small vertebrates e.g. B. the Peruvian eared mouse or other rodents. Insects, scorpions, crabs and various birds on the coast, fruits and carrion are also eaten. They also eat seeds, including those of caper bushes ( Capparis ) or Prosopis juliflora . Little is known about reproduction. Births were recorded in October and November.

Danger

The IUCN estimates the population of the Sechura fox as low endangered. The fluctuation of the population due to persecution and disease is great. Since the foxes also eat chickens and guinea pigs, farmers consider them pests.
