General plan of the lake park

The Seepark Aspern or short- Sea Park is a park in the 22nd Viennese district Danube town in the center of the under construction urban development area seaside town Aspern . It is located on the Janis-Joplin-Promenade and with an area of around 48,200 m² in front of the Yella-Hertzka-Park , the Hannah-Arendt-Park and the still unfinished Madame-d'Ora-Park, it is the largest park in the Seestadt. It is named after the adjacent, artificially created lake , which also gave the Seestadt Aspern its name.

history

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Untere Hausfeld, which at that time still belonged to the Floridsdorf district, was located here . The Aspern Airport built here was opened in 1912 and at that time was the largest airport in Austria. After it was closed in 1977, the site lay fallow for years and was used as a traffic training area by the ARBÖ motoring club from 1988 . In 2009 the demolition of the airfield and the construction of the Seestadt Aspern began. The excavation work for the 47,000 m² lake, officially known as the Seestadt Aspern landscape pond , began in summer 2010. On May 26, 2014, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the construction work on the EU- co-financed Seepark as well as the Yella-Hertzka-Park and Hannah-Arendt-Park. On July 3, 2015, the Seepark, the lake and the Yella-Hertzka-Park were opened to the public as part of an opening ceremony. On the site south of the Seepark, after the demolition of the runway of the former airport, the Seeparkquartier is to be built from spring 2016 with a planned construction time of three years .

layout

The Seepark has a "lake playground" as well as four areas with different lake-related topics, in which there are also children's play areas. On the more than 750-meter-long south bank of the groundwater lake, which is 10 meters deep at its deepest point, there are two pebble beaches where "wild bathing" is permitted. Dogs are not allowed in the parking area, with the exception of a walkway along the Janis-Joplin-Promenade and two access routes to the dog zone , which are mandatory. The fenced, 2942 m² dog zone is located at the eastern end of the park on Sonnenallee and has lake access for the dogs.

Since September 2015 there have been two running routes that start in the park, lead via Seestadtstrasse to a wooded area to the east, and finally end again in the park. The “Rollinsel” skate park is located directly below the Seestadt underground station on the U2 line , which spans the park in this area.
