The Arnsberg Ruhrwiese glider airfield was a glider airfield in Arnsberg .
History and description
The place has been home to the Luftsportgruppe Arnsberg e. V. and was inaugurated on August 12, 1956 with a national flight day. In 1961 a hall and a club house were built. The glider airfield is located in the middle of the Ruhr loop . Since 2005 the Aeroclub Arnsberg e. V., which emerged from the Luftsportgruppe Arnsberg eV.
The place had a grass runway about 990 meters long. In addition to gliders, motor gliders and ultralight air sports equipment were most recently at home on the airfield . Open days were held in the past. In addition to the rifle and ruins festival, these days were the third largest event in Alt-Arnsberg. There were glider aerobatics , UL demonstrations, Mitfluggelegenheiten in gliders , motor gliders, helicopters and powered aircraft of the Echo class ( weight up to 2 t) and offered glider starts aero tow.
Closure of the glider site
After more than 60 years, the city of Arnsberg did not renew the lease contract after political discussions. The Arnsberg Ruhrwiese glider airfield was inevitably given up by the club. The AIP (Aeronautical Information Publication) of the German Air Traffic Control announced in the issue of March 14th, 2019 in GEN-0-20: "Glider airfield Arnsberg-Ruhrwiese ... withdrawn." The new use of the unused and fallow land since summer 2016 continues to be politically controversial.
