The Teck glider airfield is located at the northern foot of the Teckberg and east of the municipality of Dettingen unter Teck , west of the municipality of Bissingen an der Teck and south of the district of Nabern von Kirchheim unter Teck . The Fliegergruppe Dettingen unter Teck and the Fliegergruppe Neuffener Tal are based on the site .

history

At the Teckberg , as well as at more famous glider airfields such as the Wasserkuppe , the first flight attempts by pioneers such as B. Wolf Hirth instead. From 1928, flight and working groups from the surrounding communities and cities built, maintained and flown gliders on their own. At this point in time, the starts took place on the sloping slope of the Hörnles and later also from Hohenbohl and Yellow Rock.

In the following years, a club house and two hangars, one of which is still in use today, as well as drag lifts to transport the planes up the mountain and the Nabern-Teck airfield were built, so that the Teck site could be inaugurated in 1934.

Due to the ambitions and support of the National Socialists, a gliding school was founded on the site in 1935, which was initially used for civilian purposes, but later served the National Socialist Aviation Corps as a pilot school for the Air Force. Nevertheless, important competitions took place on the airfield until 1939. a. also experienced lively participation through innovations such as the winch launch and aircraft towing , as well as the use of thermals in addition to slope updrafts.

During the war years, civil aviation use on the Teck glider airfield largely came to a standstill, and the companies Schempp-Hirth and Wolf Hirth, which had their headquarters at the airfield in Nabern, were involved in the war-related production for the Messerschmidt and Dornier companies.

After the war, the airfield came under the supervision of the Americans, who carried out dismantling work on the facilities on the Teckberg. Only the large flying hall and the club house were spared. When gliding was permitted again in West Germany in the early 1950s, the airfield could no longer be used as such, as it was used for agriculture. Only in 1956 could flight operations be resumed on the actual Teck glider airfield. At that time, the majority of the region's flying groups were already using the newly built and now world-famous airfield on the Hahnweide in Kirchheim.

Todays use

Today, the Swabian Alb is one of the most popular regions in the world for gliding, which is due to the excellent thermal conditions. That is why flight operations are mainly carried out on weekends and public holidays, but sometimes also during the week. The glider site is approved for glider pilots, motor gliders and microlight aircraft. Motor planes are only allowed to use the Nabern-Teck airport, which is 400 m away.

Ten gliders belonging to the club, one motor glider and one club UL are stationed at the airfield. There are also around a dozen private glider pilots and motor gliders housed in the hangar. There is also a workshop in which various repair work can be carried out, a flight room with catering, an office and a garage.

Flight operations

The start is usually in the winch start either on runway 13 or 31. After the start, the right-hand course, adapted to the terrain, is usually flown. If you take off from runway 13, you will normally land on runway 09 on the final approach to runway 13 due to the extensive development. Motor gliders and microlight aircraft always fly a north artery circuit and land and take off on the main runway. 60 starts per day are not uncommon.

The Teckberg as a witness mountain in front of the actual Swabian Alb offers ideal slope flight requirements: It is possible to find slope updrafts mostly in combination with thermals on the east, north or west slope with appropriate wind conditions. Thus, distances of 700 km and more can be mastered from the site.

At the airfield there is also training to become a glider and ultralight pilot, which is carried out with training aircraft (gliders). The flight is from the beginning / middle of April to the end of October, if the weather permits.
