Bless Kelemu

Segenet Kelemu (* in Finote Selam, Godscham , Ethiopia , 1956 ) is an Ethiopian phytopathologist . She heads the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi and received the L'Oréal UNESCO Prize for Women Scientists in 2014.

Life

Youth and education

Kelemu was born in the small village of Finote Selam in the Ethiopian province of Godscham . She herself describes her life as relatively simple, she collected firewood and fetched water from the neighboring river. She attended school in her village.

1974 Kelemu moved to Addis Ababa to where the university to visit and study botany. She completed her studies (Bachelor of Science) with honors in 1979. She then moved to the United States to complete a master's degree in botany / genetics at Montana State University until 1985 . In her master's thesis ("The inheritance of resistance to Rhynchosporium secalis in Ethiopian barley cultivars") she dealt with the resistance of Ethiopian barley to Rhynchosporium leaf spot disease .

Kelemu then moved to Kansas State University , where she received her PhD in molecular biology and botany until 1989. Her doctorate is entitled "Molecular cloning and characterization of an avirulence gene from Xanthomonas campestris pv. Oryzae". Between 1989 and 1992 she conducted research on molecular factors in pathogenesis at Cornell University .

Professional activities

From 1992 Kelemu worked as a scientist at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical in Cali (Colombia), one of the 15 international agricultural research centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). She returned to the African continent in 2007 and began working as the head of the “Biosciences Eastern and Central Africa” program at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi (Kenya); ILRI is also a CGIAR institute. After temporarily serving as Vice President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) in 2013, Kelemu has been head of the International Center for Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), which is also located in Nairobi, since November 1, 2013 .

Awards

Kelemu has received numerous international awards for her scientific work. In 2011 she and Zeyaur Khan received the award from The World Academy of Sciences in the field of agricultural sciences . She received the honor for the discovery of the beneficial bacteria of the Brachiaria grass.

In 2014 Kelemu received the UNESCO L'Oréal Prize for Women Scientists. UNESCO honored her work on microorganisms in tropical forage production and how they resist environmental and climatic changes.

Private

Kelemu is married and has one daughter.
