Seigerhütte Wernigerode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seigerhütte Wernigerode was an early modern ironworks near the city of Wernigerode on the northern edge of the Harz . It mainly served the processing of the ores found within the county of Wernigerode , but also processed copper ore from Rammelsberg near Goslar .

history

In 1511, Count Botho zu Stolberg allowed the construction of a Seigerhütte at the same place or near a Schleifkote mentioned in 1413 not far from the Holtemme near Wernigerode. Heinrich Schreiber from Halberstadt , who also had the Schreiberteich built, and his partners from Braunschweig secured this right . The founding of the Seigerhütte Wernigerode is said to be due to the Portuguese demand for metals and products in Antwerp at the time . The operators of the Saigerhütte “could sell their cookware to Jakob Schütze, who set up a copper hammer near the Saigerhütte, or in Braunschweig at the copper-processing trades there.”

Contemporary witnesses

Today, the Seigerhüttenweg in Wernigerode is a reminder of the location of the old ironworks, which at the beginning of the 17th century briefly served as the residence of the ruling Count of Stolberg.
