Being and having (French original title Être et avoir ) is an award-winning French documentary from 2002 about a French village school in Saint-Étienne-sur-Usson in Auvergne . The film was presented at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2002 and was released in French cinemas on August 28, 2002.

The film takes place in a village school in Auvergne, where all children are taught in one class until the end of primary school. Georges Lopez is the only teacher in a class who has to respond to the individual developments of his children and who is almost entirely responsible for bringing up the children. A few adults can be seen here and there.
The film begins in a snowy landscape in winter and ends in summer.

The film received the Louis Delluc Prize and the European Film Prize for Documentation in 2002 and was nominated for the César in 2003 in the categories of Best Film , Best Director and awarded in the category of Best Editing . That same year, the award of followed Syndicat Français de la Critique de Cinéma as the best French film .
