Seishirō Endō

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seishirō Endō ( Japanese 遠藤 征 四郎 , Endō Seishirō ; * 1942 ) is a Japanese Aikidō teacher ( Shihan ) of Aikikai in the rank of 8th Dan . Endō is one of the few living people who studied directly under Aikidō founder Morihei Ueshiba .

Seishirō Endō began Aikido at Gakushūin University in 1963 and names Kisshōmaru Ueshiba , Kisaburo Osawa and Seigo Yamaguchi as his three fathers of Aikido. He trained at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo with other teachers including Hiroshi Tada , Mitsunari Kanai and Yasuo Kobayashi . When Endo was 30 years old, he dislocated his right shoulder, which was the reason for his gentler aikidō style.

In 1993 he founded the Saku Dōjō ( 佐 久 道場 ) in his hometown of Saku .

Teaching method

Endō mainly teaches principles of how to bond with your partner and how to move freely. Less focus is on learning a large number of techniques. He also emphasizes that each student makes sure they are in touch during each phase of an exercise or technique. He speaks of the permanent concentration of the ki , permanent relaxation of the upper body, permanent flexible movements and the permanent serenity of the mind (English: "calmness of the mind"). He encourages his students to question and not accept everything as it is taught without making sure that this is also true for himself.

"I began to ceaselessly examine and confirm my state of mind: myself when it went well, myself when it went poorly, myself when I was trying to defeat my partner, myself when I was feeling fear, myself when I was feeling insecure, etc . From these confirmations, I learned the importance of ceaselessly keeping my mind calm. "

“I began to ceaselessly check my state of mind and make sure of it: of myself when things went well, of myself when things went bad, of myself when I tried to fight my partners, of myself when I felt fear of myself when I was insecure, etc. From these assurances I learned the importance of a permanent calm, balanced mindset / inner serenity.
