Sekgoma II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sekgoma II. (* 1869 - November 17, 1925 ; also Sekgoma a kgama leraraetsa ) was a traditional ruler ( Setswana : kgosikgolo ) of the Bamangwato in Bechuanaland , today's Botswana . His son Seretse Khama became Botswana's first president.

He was the son of long-time ruler Khama III. and Khama's first wife, Elizabeth MmaBessie. His father, who resided in Shoshong , sent him into exile in Lephephe and Nata in 1898 because of political differences . It was not until 1920 that they reconciled. In 1923 Khama III died, so that Sekgoma II succeeded him in office at the age of 54. His reign only lasted two years before he passed away. Sekgoma's son, Seretse II , born in 1921 , was too young to succeed, so that Sekgoma's younger brother Tshekedi Khama was appointed regent and guardian of Seretses. Seretse II became Botswana's first president in 1966 as Seretse Khama; his son Ian Seretse Khama was president of the country from 2008 to 2018.
