history
The land belonged to John Selden since 1695 . It was not until 1854 that the island, on whose territory a farm and a quarry were operated, was separated from the land by a spring flood with the formation of Selden Creek . The reddish stones from the quarry were used to pave many streets in New York and Philadelphia, including Surf Avenue on Coney Island . In the 1940s, the Selden family sold the land to the government.
