Selenicereus chontalensis is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Selenicereus chontalensis grows extended to pendulous lithophytic with branched shoots that are up to 1 meter (or more) long. The light green to yellowish green, often overgrown shoots that are rooted on the underside are somewhat articulated. The individual sections are 10 to 40 centimeters long and 4 to 5 centimeters in diameter. The 5 to 6 narrow, wing-like ribs are notched and often tinged with reddish. From the slightly sunken areoles arise 5 to 10 millimeter long, yellowish thorns that become darker with age. The 1 to 4 central spines are somewhat stronger than the 5 to 7 slender and flexible radial spines.

The funnel-shaped, white, strongly scented flowers are indicated zygomorph and reach a length of 6 to 8 centimeters. Your pericarpel is conspicuously tuberous and covered with triangular scales and twisted hair. The red, spherical fruits are fragrant and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Selenicereus chontalensis is widespread in the Mexican state of Oaxaca in pine and oak forests. The first description as Nyctocereus chontalensis was published in 1950 by Edward Johnston Alexander . Myron William Kimnach (* 1922) placed it in 1991 in the genus Selenicereus .

The systematic position of the species is unclear. Ralf Bauer suggested in 2003 to recognize the genus Strophocactus again and to classify it there.
