Selenicereus vagans is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

Selenicereus vagans usually grows lithophytically , leaning-climbing with richly branched shoots and forms large groups. The light green shoots have a diameter of 1 to 1.5 centimeters from which numerous aerial roots often arise, which are dark magenta in color when young. Their 8 to 10 low ribs are rounded and have no humps. From the areoles , which are 1 to 1.5 centimeters apart, arise numerous, needle-like, stiff, brownish-yellow thorns up to 10 millimeters in length.

The strongly fragrant, white flowers are up to 15 centimeters long and of the same diameter. The pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with spread out, finely needle-like thorns. The ellipsoidal fruits are pink in color. They are up to 7 centimeters long and 3 to 5 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Selenicereus vagans is distributed in western Mexico in the states of Guerrero , Jalisco , Michoacán and Sinaloa at altitudes of 50 to 2400 meters. The first description as Cereus vagans was published in 1904 by Mary Katharine Brandegee . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Selenicereus in 1920 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
