Selenicereus wercklei is a species of plant in the genus Selenicereus fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the German botanist Carl Wercklé (1860–1924).

description

Selenicereus wercklei grows epiphytically with richly branched shoots . The light green, slender, almost rotating shoots have numerous aerial roots . They are 1 to 2 meters long and 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. The 8 to 12 ribs are very flat. The raised areoles carry a tuft of wool. There are no thorns .

The flowers are 15 to 16 inches long. The outer bracts are greenish white with a magenta base. The inner bracts are white with a bright magenta base. The pericarpel and the flower tube are thorny. The yellow, egg-shaped fruits have brown thorns.

Distribution and systematics

Selenicereus wercklei is common in Costa Rica . The first description as Cereus wercklei was published in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Selenicereus in 1920 .
